Mother’s Day and Being a Mother

Dr. Honet's Mother's-Day Gift-Giving Guide

DrLindaHonet_HeadShotMother’s Day is just a few days away, and it brings to mind how much I love being a mother. Above you see me and my children at Nick’s graduation from Yale in 2015. Being Mom to Jackie and Nick is my proudest and most challenging role and certainly my most fulfilling and happiest. I have to say that being a mother is truly life’s most wonderful of experiences.

Let us take a moment and celebrate motherhood and honor our mothers. What better time than Mother’s Day to recognize our mothers and talk about gift giving for the special women in our lives? A good gift requires forethought, consideration, and reflection. And especially on Mother’s Day, it is the love, thought, and effort that count after all. Ask any mom how she feels about the homemade card or the hand-crafted paper bouquet made by her little ones. It may not be the most beautiful creation to the unsentimental eye, but to a mother, it immediately becomes a special, heartfelt moment to be tucked away into the archives of mommy memories.

Although I love receiving a gift, I find equally tremendous joy in the actual giving of a gift to someone I love. I really enjoy the whole process, including the wrapping, of course. If time has escaped you and you have been remiss about getting your mother her mother’s day gift yet, then I urge you to check out my list of gift resources, perfect for the women that have nurtured and cared for you. My list is a compilation of some beautiful retail stores, both local and national, that are my favorites and carry a wide array of really beautiful items, at all price points. A gift from any of these wonderful stores will surely satisfy the most discerning female palate and will stand the test of time. Hightail it to get the “something special” for that “someone special,” the one that raised and loved you, your beautiful mom.

I absolutely adore this store for gifts. I have to admit, this is one of my go-to places for gifts. Not only are the items beautiful and beautifully displayed, the sales staff are always great at helping you find the perfect gift, at any price point. From personal items, jewelry, and home accoutrements, Henri Bendel is a class act. Plus, they will gift wrap at no charge in their iconic brown and white boxes and paper for the perfectly elegant presentation.

I have loved this store truly forever, 25 years to be exact. In fact, I remember the very first store in the country opening up in Wayne, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia in 1992 when I was a resident in Dermatology. As I was driving by, I was intrigued by the artsy window displays and walked in to find a plethora of all things beautiful. This store is a little earthy, hippie, and Bohemian, full of color and texture. Here, you will find fashion, accessories, and home décor, including even furniture. Anthropologie is a store to stroll through and peruse leisurely. And I never leave it empty handed.

I know that Crate and Barrel is usually on the list for wedding registries, but this is a great store for your mom if she likes to decorate, entertain, or cook. The price is always reasonable, and the options are numerous. I own several serving pieces and barware from here, and they have lasted for decades. Always strong in great design and line, Crate and Barrel never disappoints, whether you’re looking for something for the kitchen or table, or the perfect furniture piece.

Remember how I have shared my love for paper and crafts in past blog posts? Well, this is the place for just this kind of thing. Whether you like DIY or simply want to find a unique, quirky card or gift, this store is a fun one. Paper Source even hosts paper craft classes, where you and your mom can spend some quality time creating something beautiful together.

If you are a traditionalist and flowers are your thing, this florist will create the most beautiful flower arrangements imaginable. I have received many a bouquet as gifts from friends, and the creations are stunning and long-lasting, too. You will never go wrong with flowers for Mother’s Day, especially ones from Blossoms.

If your mother is one that loves personal grooming products with a flare, Ruby’s Balm is for her. This store houses a very eclectic and unique variety of skincare, haircare, and fragrances for the discerning woman. Although fragrance isn’t often a favorite among dermatologists, I do love the Lollia line of hand creams. They are luxurious and emollient and smell absolutely divine. My favorite in the line is the Lollia Relax Shea Butter Handcrème. Ooh la la, simply wonderful!

Have you driven by this store and wonder what was housed inside? Well, it is an eye-candy bonanza. Also a lifestyle store, Leon & Lulu is a place to find everything unique, cool, and funky, from high-end custom furniture to gifts, accessories, and women’s clothing. I love to go “window shopping” here during the holidays, because the whole space is decorated and festive to fit the seasonal theme. Of course, as one would expect, my “window shopping” ends up with a trip to the check-out counter, because I can never leave without a distinctive item in hand. Leon & Lulu is the perfect place to find the perfect, unique gift for someone special like your mom.

Stop by this attractive store nestled in the heart of Birmingham, and you are sure to find something wonderful. Whether your mom loves fashion, decorating, cooking, or entertaining, you will find the perfect gift here. The owner Lori Karbal has an amazing eye for elegance, design, and functionality. My favorite part of this luscious store is the eclectic collection of cookbooks and coffee table books. This store is one of my favorites for getting a gift for the hostess as well.

I have known the owner Diane Harris for years now, and her taste for jewelry and all items to arouse your aesthetic senses is exquisite. The collections, which have been all curated by Diane herself, will immediately draw you in. Of course, you will notice the beautiful sparkle and shine that surround you, but you will also find that the staff are warm, helpful, and inviting. Incidentally, this store is a one-stop shopping opportunity for my husband, where he will find a ready-and-waiting wish list of Linda Honet favorites. What could be easier?

I have known the proprietors Mary Ann and Monica of Zieban Mare for quite a while, and their discerning eye and exceptional taste have created the loveliest store in the tucked-away enclave of Franklin. They tout themselves as a luxury lifestyle boutique, but more importantly, the warm welcome and personal service are what will be apparent as soon as you walk in the door. From chic apparel, one-of-a kind jewelry, sophisticated home décor, and coveted gift items, this store is a haven for beautiful things. Zieban Mare carries one of my favorite lines called Jamin Puech, a French brand of unique, hand-made handbags, and small leather goods.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you, my dear blog readers, and your beautiful mothers, too.

Happy, Healthy Skin!
